airtun-ng 1.2rc2 error message 'cannot inject: handshake note captured yet'

On FreeBSD 10.2 with an Atheros wireless card, I receive several "Cannot inject: handshake not captured yet" errors when trying to start airtun-ng against a WPA network with known SSID and passphrase.  Any ideas about how to resolve this?
