You can't just use another driver because one isn't working. A driver is meant for a specific set of cards and there are no 2 drivers (in the kernel) that can handle the same card.

I can't do it. I don't have such hardware and thus I can't do any testing and even if I could test, the culprit could be in the firmware (limiting by mistake or on purpose). Also, I'm not a driver developer (yet).

I have just created an account to say that even when using the 4.12 kernel from the Ubuntu mainline, on a Ubuntu 17.04 machine (the default kernel was 4.10), the QCA6174 card is not able to see any access points.

I bet you haven't read the requirements or the install file. You're missing one: openssl.

You just read the installation instructions and especially the requirements part on the install page of the wiki or the install file provided.

do a dist-upgrade instead of upgrade then reboot.

Look into dmesg to see if there are any error from the driver itself.

Do i need to get madwifi driver or is this one ok that i have? so that i can continue to follow those wonderfull tutorials.

No. Madwifi has been long deprecated in favor of ath5k and will not work with recent kernel unless some serious work is done.

As mentioned in several posts, your card is not able to see 802.11n and those clients are most likely 802.11n.

Because as I said, they're most likely 802.11n. Your card is physically only able to see 802.11b or g clients.
